Description: ALICE measured the nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) and elliptic flow ($\nu_{2}$) of D mesons ($D^{0}$, $D^{+}$, $D^{⁎+}$ and $D^{s+}$) in semi-central Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =5.02$ TeV. The increased amount of data in semi-central Pb–Pb events obtained with the LHC Run 2 provides access to more precise measurements for the $R_{AA}$ and the non-strange D-meson $\nu_{2}$ with respect to Run 1 results, as well as to the first measurement of the $D_{s}$ -meson $\nu_{2}$ at LHC energies. The first application of the Event Shape Engineering technique in the analysis of the $\nu_{2}$ coefficient of $D^{0}$ and $D^{+}$ mesons is also illustrated.

Description: Azimuthally differential femtoscopic measurements, being sensitive to spatio-temporal characteristics of the source as well as to the collective velocity fields at freeze-out, provide very important information on the nature and dynamics of the system evolution. While the HBT radii modulations relative to the second harmonic event plane reflect mostly the spatial geometry of the source, the third harmonic results are mostly defined by the velocity fields. Radii variations with respect to the third harmonic event plane unambiguously signal a collective expansion and anisotropy in the flow fields. Event shape engineering (ESE) is a technique proposed to select events corresponding to a particular shape. Azimuthally differential HBT combined with ESE allows for a detailed analysis of the relation between initial geometry, anisotropic flow and the deformation of source shape. We present azimuthally differential pion femtoscopy with respect to second and third harmonic event planes as a function...

Description: First experimental results are presented on event-by-event net-proton fluctuation measurements in Pb- Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV, recorded by the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The ALICE detector is well suited for such studies due to its excellent particle identification capabilities and large acceptance, which is crucial for fluctuation analysis. The studies are focussed on second order cumulants, but the analysis technique used is more general and will be applied, in the near future, also to higher order cumulants.

Description: The ALICE collaboration has measured the inclusive charmonium production at forward rapidity in Pb–Pb and p–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV and sNN=8.16TeV , respectively. In Pb–Pb collisions, the J/ ψ and ψ (2S) nuclear modification factors ( R AA ), as well as the J/ ψ elliptic flow ( v2 ) and averaged squared transverse momentum ( 〈pT2〉 ), are presented. In p–Pb collisions, the J/ ψ nuclear modification factor ( R pPb ) as a function of p t and rapidity is presented. In both systems, our measurements are compared to theoretical calculations and to the results at lower energies.

Description: The production of prompt D s + mesons was measured for the first time in collisions of heavy nuclei with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis was performed on a data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair, sNN−−−√ , of 2.76 TeV in two different centrality classes, namely 0–10% and 20–50%. D s + mesons and their antiparticles were reconstructed at mid-rapidity from their hadronic decay channel D s +  → ϕπ +, with ϕ → K−K+, in the transverse momentum intervals 4 p T 12GeV/c and 6 p T 12 GeV/c for the 0–10% and 20–50% centrality classes, respectively. The nuclear modification factor R AA was computed by comparing the p T-differential production yields in Pb-Pb collisions to those in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. This pp reference was obtained using the cross section measured at s√=7 TeV and scaled to s√=2.76 TeV. The R AA of D s + mesons was compared to that of non-strange D mesons in the 10% most central...

Description: We report on measurements of a charge-dependent flow using a novel three-particle correlator with ALICE in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC, and discuss the implications for observation of local parity violation and the Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) in heavy-ion collisions. Charge-dependent flow is reported for different collision centralities as a function of the event charge asymmetry. While our results are in qualitative agreement with expectations based on the CMW, the nonzero signal observed in higher harmonics correlations indicates a possible significant background contribution. We also present results on a differential correlator, where the flow of positive and negative charges is reported as a function of the mean charge of the particles and their pseudorapidity separation. We argue that this differential correlator is better suited to distinguish the differences in positive and negative charges expected due to the CMW and the background effects, such as local charge conservation coupled...

Description: The production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays was measured as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) in minimum-bias p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV with ALICE at the LHC for $0.5 < p_{\rm T} < 12$ GeV/$c$ in the rapidity range $-1.06 < y_{\rm cms} < 0.14$ in the centre-of-mass frame. To estimate the contribution of electrons from background sources an invariant mass approach was used. The nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm pPb}$ was calculated by comparing the $p_{\rm T}$-differential invariant cross section in p–Pb collisions to a pp reference at the same centre-of-mass energy, which was obtained by interpolating measurements at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The $R_{\rm pPb}$ is consistent with unity within uncertainties of about 25%, which become larger below $p_{\rm T} = 1$ GeV/$c$. The data are also reproduced by model calculations including cold nuclear matter effects.

Description: We report on two-particle charge-dependent correlations in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions as a function of the pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle difference, $\mathrm{\Delta}\eta$ and $\mathrm{\Delta}\varphi$ respectively. These correlations are studied using the balance function that probes the charge creation time and the development of collectivity in the produced system. The dependence of the balance function on the event multiplicity as well as on the trigger and associated particle transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 7$, 5.02, and 2.76 TeV, respectively, are presented. In the low transverse momentum region, for $0.2 < p_{\mathrm{T}} < 2.0$ GeV/$c$, the balance function becomes narrower in both $\mathrm{\Delta}\eta$ and $\mathrm{\Delta}\varphi$ directions in all three systems for events with higher multiplicity. The experimental findings favor models that either incorporate some collective behavior (e.g. AMPT) or different...

Description: The elliptic flow, $v_{2}$, of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays at forward rapidity ($2.5 < y < 4$) is measured in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The scalar product, two- and four-particle $Q$ cumulants and Lee-Yang zeros methods are used. The dependence of the $v_2$ of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays on the collision centrality, in the range 0--40%, and on transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, is studied in the interval $3 < p_{\rm T} < 10$ GeV/$c$. A positive $v_2$ is observed with the scalar product and two-particle $Q$ cumulants in semi-central collisions (10--20% and 20--40% centrality classes) for the $p_{\rm T}$ interval from 3 to about 5 GeV/$c$. The $v_2$ magnitude tends to decrease towards more central collisions and with increasing $p_{\rm T}$. It becomes compatible with zero in the interval $6 < p_{\rm T} < 10{\rm GeV/}c$. The results are compared to models describing the interaction of heavy quarks and open heavy-flavour...
