Description: The possibility of devising measures of psychological phenomena remains a contentious issue since the early days of Psychology as an independent science. The aim of this paper is to appraise two theoretical perspectives on which the boundaries of Psychometric measurement have been based: Representational Measurement Theory (RMT) and Realist Measurement Approach (RMA). This paper discusses distinctive features and specific problems faced by each conceptual approach, and evaluates claims by authors on both sides of the debate that the Rasch models consist of empirical tests of psychological attributes. Furthermore, the paper highlights two critical conditions that must be met for a satisfactory solution to the problem of psychological measurement. Notwithstanding, the paper defends the legitimacy of using psychometric instruments in psychological assessment in professional practice, even if definitive answers to the questions of psychological assessment do not yet exist.

Title: Elasticity of substitution and social conflict: a structuralist note on Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-first Century
Author: Barbosa - Filho, Nelson H
    Subject: Income Distribution ; Structuralist Macroeconomics ; Goodwin ; Piketty ; B50 ; E11 ; E12 ; O51
Description: This paper presents a structuralist analysis of the elasticity of substitution between capital and labour, with an application to the US economy. The paper shows how the elasticity of substitution is an aggregated residual parameter, as well as how fluctuations of it can be explained in terms of technological, distributive, demographic and demand shocks. Then, based on a 2×2 dynamical model for the wage share of income and the employment rate, the paper analyses Thomas Piketty’s theoretical proposition that the functional distribution of income may not be stationary.

    Subject: Ideas.Repec.Org/P/Ipe/Ipetds/0147.Html
Description: This paper presents the main issues involved in estimating potential output. The objective is to describe the alternative methods and analyze their application and implications for growth forecasts and macroeconomic policy in Brazil. The text emphasizes the determinants of potential output under fixed and flexible coefficients of production. Given the wide use of aggregate measures of Total Factor Productivity in growth accounting, and the sensitivity of such a variable to economic assumptions and errors of measurement, the text also presents the main applied critiques and alternatives to aggregate growth-accounting exercises. The main conclusions are: i) the annual potential growth rate of Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) varies substantially depending on the method and hypotheses adopted and, what is most important, potential GDP is not separable from effective GDP in the long-run; ii) growth-accounting and time-series studies of Brazil result in low potential-output growth rates...

Title: Funcionamento Diferencial do Item no Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test
Author: Filho, Nelson Hauck; Teixeira, Marco Antônio Pereira

Description: The aim of the present study was to investigate Differential Item Functioning (DIF) for sex in a popular screening measure of alcohol dependence, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Participants were 254 undergraduate students. Rasch analysis-based DIF procedures were employed to evaluate the possibility of sex bias in the AUDIT items. Results showed three items with inadequate fit to the unidimensional Partial Credit model and one item with a large bias against women. Specifically, item AUDIT-6 showed a larger difficulty estimate for women, suggesting a more severe aspect of drinking behavior for these individuals. Recommendations are made with regard to using raw scores based on the sum of the 10 AUDIT items. Dropping out or reformulating the AUDIT-6 item to accommodate sex differences and to reduce errors of individual ability (severity) estimates is strongly advised.
