    Description: Abstract On a characteristic surface Ω of a hyperbolic system of first-order equations in multi-dimensions ( x , t ), there exits a compatibility condition which is in the form of a transport equation along a bicharacteristic on Ω. This result can be interpreted also as a transport equation along rays of the wavefront Ω t in x -space associated with Ω. For a system of quasi-linear equations, the ray equations (which has two distinct parts) and the transport equation form a coupled system of underdetermined equations. As an example of this bicharacteristic formulation, we consider two-dimensional unsteady flow of an ideal magnetohydrodynamics gas with a plane aligned magnetic field. For any mode of propagation in this two-dimensional flow, there are three ray equations: two for the spatial coordinates x and y and one for the ray diffraction. In spite of little longer calculations, the final four equations (three ray equations and one transport equation) for the fast magneto-acoustic wave are simple and elegant and cannot be derived in these simple forms by use of a computer program like REDUCE.

    Description: Cu-doped Zn1-xCdxS nanoparticles were synthesized by coprecipitation technique in ice bath at 280 K. The band gap energy of Zn1-xCdxS:Cu nanoparticles can be tuned to a lower energy by increasing the Cd content, indicating the formation of the alloyed nanoparticles. The alloy structure is further supported by the systematic shifting of characteristic x-ray diffraction peaks to lower angles with increase in Cd content. Systematic copper doping induces a red shift in the energy band gap of Zn0.9Cd0.1S:Cu nanoparticles with increase in copper concentration. Cu-doped Zn0.9Cd0.1S nanoparticles were found to have ferromagnetic nature at 5 K whereas undoped particles were found to be diamagnetic. Green luminescence further proves proper doping of Cu into the ZnCdS matrix. It is believed that the green luminescence originates from the recombination between the shallow donor level (sulfur vacancy) and the t(2) level of Cu2+.     Description: In this paper, we propose a new design of metamaterial and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure based on double layers of metallic grids. Using finite integration technique, the electromagnetic properties of the grid structure have been investigated and this structure has been employed to enhance the performance of a patch antenna working at 11 GHz. The surface waves in the substrate of antenna have been suppressed by EBG behavior of the grid when used as a substrate, and it improves its gain to 9.21 dB from 5.64 dB. When this structure is also used as superstrate of the antenna, the gain up to 13 dB has been achieved due to its metamaterial behavior. Congregation effect of metamaterial provides a huge improvement in the directionality of the antenna and its half power beam width (HPBW) has been improved to 32.7° and 31.5° from 108.3° and 93.5° in E-and H-planes, respectively.

    Description: An understanding of the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) as affected by farming practices is imperative for maintaining soil productivity and mitigating global warming. Results of a long-term (32 years) experiment in the Indian Himalayas under rainfed soybean ( Glycine max L.)- wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) rotation was analyzed to determine the effects of mineral fertilizer and farmyard manure (FYM) application at 10 Mg ha -1 on SOC stocks and depth distribution of the labile and recalcitrant pools of SOC.
