Title: Present and future investigations of hadron formation mechanisms in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC with the ALICE experiment
    Author: Kuhn Christian
    Subject: Physics
Description: The present status and the future of hadron production characterization in Pb–Pb collisions at LHC by measuring the pT dependence of baryon over meson ratios is presented. The current RHIC and LHC results showing a strong enhancement of the Λ/KS0 ratio in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to proton-proton collisions at intermediate pT and their interpretation in terms of coalescence processes are discussed. A crucial extension of these studies to heavy flavor hadrons (D, B mesons and Λc, Λb baryons) will be enabled by the foreseen reforging of the ALICE Inner Tracking System (ITS). The main performance objectives and technological ingredients of the ITS upgrade are summarized.

Description: The use of notions of honor and shame in political communication remains a promising object of study, as this paper argues by focusing on the transition from the Late Middle Ages to the following period. Instead of relying on fixed concepts pertaining to the periods involved, the cases presented here emphasize the contrast between different modes of honour-based communication ultimately to look back on what could probably be called the medieval mode. The example chosen is the 1552 revolt of the German Protestant princes. Honour and shame were on public display in imperial dedication rituals and became a central element in imperial propaganda and in the political correspondence of princes, as well as constituting a communicative code in intra-urban conflicts. In 1552, honour-related claims materialized themselves around the concepts of Spanish servitude (under the Habsburg rule) and German liberty. Urban libel cases continued the powerful medieval tradition of historiographical damnatio memoriae. But in due course libels ceased to resort -as they had done until around 1540--- to medieval cases of lost honour as explanatory means, like the infamous Ulrich Schwarz (1422-1478). Rather than 'remembering what had been deliberately forgotten', the 1552 libels attacked the ethical and political values of living politicians.

Description: A series of Si-doped AlN-rich AlGaN layers with low resistivities was characterized by a combination of nanoscale imaging techniques. Utilizing the capability of scanning electron microscopy to reliably investigate the same sample area with different techniques, it was possible to determine the effect of doping concentration, defect distribution, and morphology on the luminescence properties of these layers. Cathodoluminescence shows that the dominant defect luminescence depends on the Si-doping concentration. For lower doped samples, the most intense peak was centered between 3.36 eV and 3.39 eV, while an additional, stronger peak appears at 3 eV for the highest doped sample. These peaks were attributed to the (V III -O N ) 2− complex and the V III 3 − vacancy, respectively. Multimode imaging using cathodoluminescence, secondary electrons, electron channeling contrast, and atomic force microscopy demonstrates that the luminescence intensity of these peaks is not homogeneously distributed but shows a strong dependence on the topography and on the distribution of screw dislocations.
