Title: Guiding follow-up of paediatric idiopathic intracranial hypertension with optical coherence tomography
Author: Loo, Kai Guo Benny; Lim, Su Ann; Lim, I-Linn Zena; Chan, Derrick Wei Shih
Subject: Papilledema -- Diagnostic Imaging ; Pseudotumor Cerebri -- Diagnosis ; Tomography, Optical Coherence -- Methods
Description: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is uncommon in the paediatric population. Papilloedema is the hallmark sign and patients can suffer permanent vision loss as a consequence. We describe the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the follow-up of two paediatric patients with newly diagnosed IIH. Patient A presented with vomiting and examination showed ophthalmoplaegia and papilloedema. She was treated with acetazolamide, furosemide and therapeutic lumbar punctures. Patient B presented with incidental papilloedema and was treated with acetazolamide and she reported intermittent headache during follow-up. Fundoscopic examinations for both patients showed persistent blurred disc margins but OCT examinations documented improvement of average retinal nerve fibre layers. OCT may be of value in monitoring for recurrence in paediatric IIH.

Description: We propose to utilize bedrock as a medium for acoustic detection of particle showers following interactions of ultra-high energy neutrinos. With the density of rock three-times larger and the speed of sound four-times larger compared to water, the amplitude of the generated bipolar pressure pulse in rock should be larger by an order of magnitude. Our preliminary simulations confirm that prediction. Higher density of rock also guarantees higher interaction rate for neutrinos. A noticeably longer attenuation length in rock reduces signal dissipation. The Pyh\"asalmi mine has a unique infrastructure and rock conditions to test this idea and, if successful, extend it to a full-size experiment.

Description: We propose the liquid-scintillator detector LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) as a next-generation neutrino observatory on the scale of 50 kt. The outstanding successes of the Borexino and KamLAND experiments demonstrate the large potential of liquid-scintillator detectors in low-energy neutrino physics. LENA's physics objectives comprise the observation of astrophysical and terrestrial neutrino sources as well as the investigation of neutrino oscillations. In the GeV energy range, the search for proton decay and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments complement the low-energy program. Based on the considerable expertise present in European and international research groups, the technical design is sufficiently mature to allow for an early start of detector realization.
