    Description: Among the different hard probes, jet results have been here selected to present a unique insight into the nature of the hot QCD matter. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti- k T algorithm with the ALICE detector at the LHC in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV in a momentum range down to 0.150 GeV and in a pseudorapidity range || < 0.9. We report inclusive jet spectra and ratios as a function of the jet transverse momenta ( p T ) for different centrality classes and jet radii. Strong suppression of the inclusive jet spectrum has been observed in the most central collisions. Comparison with theory puts more stringent constraints on modeling jet modification and energy loss in dense matter.

    Title: Jet Physics at the LHC
    Author: Di Nezza Pasquale
    Subject: Physics
    Description: The production and propagation of high pT probes can explore the mechanisms of parton energy loss, deconfinement in the medium, and shed light on the relevant physical mechanisms and the microscopic properties of the medium formed in the heavy-ion collisions. In particular, partonic energy loss results in significant modification of jet spectra. The LHC opened a new era in heavy-ion physics bringing, among several, the hard probes to unreached region of the phase-space. Some of the jet physics results are discussed.

    Title: Spin structure of the nucleon
    Author: Nezza, Pasquale
    Subject: Physics ; Elementary Particles and Nuclei ; Nuclear Physics, Heavy Ions, Hadrons ; Nuclear Fusion ; Physics;
    Description: HERMES is a second generation experiment to study the spin structure of the nucleon, in which measurements of the spin dependent properties of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering are emphasized. The first experimental results from measurements of single-spin asymmetries for pions and kaons in deep-inelastic scattering with transverse target polarization are discussed. Longitudinally polarized beam and target data provide information on the flavor decomposition of the polarized quark distributions in the nucleon and a first glimpse of the gluon polarization. Moreover, first preliminary results for the unpolarized e p → e n π +   total cross section are presented and compared to Generalized Parton Distribution calculations. 13.87.Fh – 13.60.-r – 13.88.+e

    Author: Steffens, Erhard; Carassiti, Vittorio; Ciullo, Giuseppe; Di Nezza, Pasquale; Lenisa, Paolo; Pappalardo, Luciano; Vasilyev, Alexander
    Subject: Physics - Instrumentation And Detectors ; High Energy Physics - Experiment
    Description: Since 2017, the LHCSpin study group is investigating the installation of a HERMES-type polarized gas target (PGT) in front of the LHCb detector in order to perform Single-Spin Transverse Asymmetry (SSTA) measurements. In cooperation with LHC experts, the conditions for applying a PGT are being studied. As a viable option, a cold openable storage cell is considered. A key role for avoiding instabilities of the 7 TeV proton beam is the choice of a proper coating and the suppression of wake fields. A first warm (300 K) test storage cell is planned for installation in 2019 inside the VELO vessel, subject to final approval. It will improve the ongoing SMOG program of LHCb fixed target measurements, and will provide valuable experience of running a storage cell in the harsh LHC environment. The status of the design considerations on a PGT in the LHC beam and of the discussion of critical machine issues is presented. Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 11 references

    Description: Several fixed-target experiments at the LHC are being proposed and actively studied. Splitting of beam halo from the core by means of a bent crystal combined with a second bent crystal after the target has been suggested in order to study magnetic and electric dipole moments of short-lived particles. A similar scheme without the second crystal or other schemes with more conventional solid or gas target have been proposed to study the hadronic matter and the quark-gluon plasma, as well as to provide inputs to cosmic ray physics. Most notably, an upgrade of the existing and already productive LHCb gas target (SMOG), which would make use of a storage cell, has been proposed, designed, and extensively reviewed. The implementation in LHCb of a polarised gas target, based on the storage cell technique, was also discussed, motivated by the nucleon-spin study. The status of these proposals, their technical feasibility and impacts on the LHC machine have been studied in the LHC fixed-target...

    Description: This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century. Comment: Electron Ion Collider, INT 18-3 Program.
