    Title: Effect of SMO16, a KOREAN Poly-Herbal Medicine, on Bone Mass in Ovariectomized Rat

    Subject: Ovariectomized Rat ; Osteoporosis ; Osteopontin ; Osteoblast ; Korean Medicine;
    Description: The objective of this study was to explore the effect of SMO16, a Korean poly-herbal medicine, on bone mass in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. The loss of bone mass is known to be associated with hormone deficiency in OVX rats. In the present study, we successfully produced the osteoporosis animal-model by dissecting the ovary. To determine the protective effect of SMO16 in OVX rat, SMO16 was administered at a dose of 2.25 g/kg in saline solution for 8 weeks after OVX. Furthermore, we evaluated the direct effect of SMO16 by using a soft X-ray system and Masson’s trichrome staining, phloxine-tartrazine staining, and immunohistochemistry in vivo. SMO16 significantly regulated the expression of proteoglycan and osteopontin. These data suggest that SMO16 exerts a protective effect against osteoporosis via the activation of proteoglycan and osteopontin that are closely associated with bone balance. Moreover, these findings suggest that SMO16 can act as a potential therapeutic agent for...

    Title: A Korean Poly-Herbal Medicine, SMO16, Regulates the RANKL/OPG Bone Remodeling in OVX Rat Model
    Author: Seo Il-Bok; Ahn Sang-Hyun
    Subject: 체육
    Description: Bone mass is regulated by bone resorption(osteoclast) and bone formation(osteoblast), and an imbalance between both processes results in osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterized by a loss of bone density and regulation of bone remodeling is crucial for the treatment of osteoporosis. In this study, we investigated whether SMO16, a Korean polyherbal medicine containing 5 herbal components, could regulate bone remodeling in an ovariectomized(OVX) rat model. To test the effect of SMO16 in the OVX model, the rats were divided into 3 groups: a control group, OVX group, and OVX + SMO16(2.25 g/kg) for 8 weeks(ST group). The expression of osteocalcin(OPC), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand(RANKL), and osteoprotegerin(OPG) were measured in the femur using specific antibodies. The bone mass was analyzed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. In the OVX group, protein expression of OPC was decreased; however, in the ST group, OPC expression was significantly increased...

    Subject: Canine Distemper ; Pneumonia ; Encephalitis ; Immunohistochemistry
    Description: This study was carried out to investigate the distribution of inclusion bodies in the tissues as well as to observe the general histopathological lesions of dogs infected with canine distemper. And also, the reliability of diagnostic values of inclusion bodies and the distribution of viral antigen in tissues were inspected by immunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibody. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Pneumonia observed in dogs infected with canine distemper virus was classified into interstitial, broncho-, and broncho-interstitial pneumonia histopathologically. Each occurring ratio was 35, 45 and 20%. 2. Histopathological classification of the canine distemper encephalitis was 20% in acute, 60% in subacute, and 20% in chronic encephalitis, respectively. 3. The organs in which inclusion bodies were predominantly distributed were stomach(82.6%), cerebellum(62.9%), lung(62.1%), cerebrum(50.0%), urinary bladder (46.1%), kidney(36.0%) and pancreas(25.0%). Intracytoplasmic inclusion...

    Subject: Clonorchis Sinensis ; Dmn ; All-Trans Retinoic Acid ; Cholangiocarcinogenesis ; Hamster
    Description: This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of all-trans retinoic acid(RA) on the development of cholangiocarcinoma in hamsters. Eighty six female Syrian golden hamsters were divided into four groups. Group I was for the induction of the cholangiocarcinoma, which was infected orally with C sinensis and given dimethylnitrosamine(DMN, 15ppm) in drinking water for 4 weeks. Group II was for evaluating the effect of all-trans RA treatment on the cholangiocarcinogenesis, which was treated the same as group I and orally given RA(1mg/kg, 5 times per week) for 15 weeks. Group III was given only RA hr 15 weeks. Control group IV was given only soybean oil which was solvent for RA treatment. More than 5 heads of hamsters in each group were sacrificed at 4, 7, 11 and 15 weeks after the begining of the experiment. The livers were examined grossly, histopathologically, and immunohistochemically. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Death of animals started from the 11 weeks after the begining...

    Author: 서일복; 임창형; Seo, Il-bok; Lim, Chang-hyeong
    Subject: Canine Herpesvirus Infection ; Immunohistochemistry ; Pathogenesis ; Encephalitis
    Description: This study was carried out to investigate the pathogenesis of canine herpesvirus(CHV) infection in dogs. The 17 puppies, one day old, delivered from CHV seronegative 3 dams were divided into two groups. The 13 puppies were inoculated intranasally with 1ml of CHV-KK inoculum($5{\times}10^{5.6}TCID_{50}/ml$) and 4 puppies were served as control. And then the puppies were sacrificed at 2, 4, 6 and 7 days after the treatment, and sampled nasal mucosa, trigeminal nerve, trigeminal ganglion, bone marrow, eye, brain and other major organs for the immunohistochemical examination. Distribution of CHV antigens was limited in cytoplasms and nuclei of necrotic nasal epthelia at 2 days after infection. At 4 days after infection, CHV antigens were detected in vascular walls and peripheral nerves of nasal lamina propria, reticuloendothelial cells of spleen, interstitium of kidney, leptomeningeal vascular walls and alveolar walls, At 6 and 7 days after infection, CHV antigens were detected in all of the...

These organs were examined histopathologically and electron microscopically. The platelets of puppies infected with CHV were dramatically decreased because of the damages of vascular endothelial cells. Histopathologically, necrotizing vasculitis and neuritis were proceeded the generalized focal necrosis of all organs. Necrotic changes in trigeminal ganglion, trigeminal nerve and ventroposteriomedial nucleus of thalamus were observed in 4 puppies infected...
