    Titre: Calculation of vibronic intensity of the formaldehyde 1 A 2 ← 1 A 1 transition

    Description: The absorption intensity of the electronically forbidden but vibronically allowed n π* ( 1 A 2 ← 1 A 1 ) transition of formaldehyde is calculated to illustrate the utility of the formalism involving floating basis orbitals detailed in the preceding paper. The general equations are further simplified by applying the independent systems approximation. The bulk of the intensity is predicted to be polarized in the plane and perpendicular to the CO bond as observed, and the calculated dipole strength of 2.1×10 −3 a.u. compares well with the measured 2.3×10 −3 . This intensity is due to the electron distributions following the nuclear vibrations and is partly cancelled by the intensity which arises from the vibrations of the nuclei themselves. If fixed basis functions are used, intensity arises only from the vibrations of the nuclei. Most of the intensity due to the vibrating electron clouds is found to come from interactions with the overlap distributions of the CH bonds. When electron distributions are considered to simply screen nuclei, such interactions are lost.
