Description: "This edited volume offers critical reflections on an essential component of research method in the field of second language acquisition - data. Scholars working on diverse areas (e.g., pragmatics, corrective feedback, phonology) and approaches (e.g., corpus linguistics, concept-oriented analyses, variationism) have come together to identify challenges researchers face when collecting, coding, and analyzing data and to provide guidance for making advancements regarding these aspects of research method. This volume also showcases three types of critical reflection. One involves building a relevant corpus of published investigation and using that database to identify methodological issues in existing research. Another consists of recoding and reanalyzing published work, before reflecting on the impact that these decisions have on observations made about interlanguage. The third begins with a particular area of or approach to second language acquisition and then offers a critical examination on the challenges that characterize the selected area or approach" -- Provided by publisher

Description: "Some people are apparently very good at learning languages beyond the one(s) they acquire in infancy. The 19th century British explorer Sir Richard Burton claimed to have spoken more than 40 languages and dialects (Farwell, 1963). There are also 'linguistic savants', people who, despite a number of cognitive impairments, have a precocious ability to learn languages. Christopher, a linguistic savant studied by Smith and Tsimpli (1995), has a number of cognitive impairments that make it difficult for him to find his way around or deal with everyday tasks like doing up buttons or shaving. However 'he can read, write and communicate in any of fifteen to twenty languages' (1995: 1). In contrast to these examples, other people appear to be rather poor at language learning. In 2008, the Guardian newspaper reported the attempts of a French teacher at a London school to motivate a Vietnamese boy in his bottom French class, Tommy, for an upcoming French exam. In doing so he was presented with a challenge".

Description: Despite the key role played by second language acquisition (SLA) courses in linguistics, teacher education and language teaching degrees, participants often struggle to bridge the gap between SLA theories and their many applications in the classroom. In order to overcome the `transfer' problem from theory to practice, Andrea Nava and Luciana Pedrazzini present SLA principles through the actions and words of teachers and learners.0Second Language Acquisition in Action identifies eight important SLA principles and involves readers in an 'experiential' approach which enables them to explore these principles `in action'. Each chapter is structured around three stages: experience and reflection ; conceptualisation ; and restructuring and planning. Discussion questions and tasks represent the core of the book. These help readers in the process of `experiencing' SLA research and provide them with opportunities to try their hands at different areas of language teachers' professional expertise. Aimed at those on applied linguistics MA courses, TESOL/EFL trainees and in-service teachers, Second Language Acquisition in Action features: Key Questions at the start of each chapter ; Data-based tasks to foster reflection and to help bridge the gap between theory and practice ; Audiovisual extracts of lessons on an accompanying website ; Further Reading suggestions at the end of each chapter
