    Titre: Real Presence and False Gods: The Eucharist as Discernment and Formation
    Auteur: Budde, Michael L.
    Sujet: Communion ; Christianity ; Theology;
    Description: Theologians and pastoral leaders have long recognized the centrality of the sacraments--especially the Eucharist--in the formation of Christian communities and disciples of the Gospel therein. Augustine's well-known reminder is relevant here--that the Eucharist is unlike all other sorts of food inasmuch as transformed bread and wine does not simply metabolize into the human body, but in fact changes the recipient into part of the Body of Christ ("nor shall you change Me, like the food of your flesh, into yourself, but you shall be changed into Me").

    Description: Agricultural production capacity contributes to food security in Afghanistan and is largely dependent on irrigated farming, mostly utilizing surface water fed by snowmelt. Because of the high contribution of irrigated crops (80%) to total agricultural production, knowing the spatial distribution and year-to-year variability in irrigated areas is imperative to monitoring food security for the country. We used 16-day composites of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor to create 23-point time series for each year from 2000 through 2013. Seasonal peak values and time series were used in a threshold-dependent decision tree algorithm to map irrigated areas in Afghanistan for the last 14years. In the absence of ground reference irrigated area information, we evaluated these maps with the irrigated areas classified from multiple snapshots of the landscape during the growing season from Landsat 5 optical...

    Description: Oxidized terpenes and terpenoids are highly valuable compounds for organic chemistry. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenase P450 BM-3 from Bacillus megaterium is able to catalyze oxidation of terpenes with high efficiency. Mutations at the amino acid positions 47, 51, and 87 resulted in significantly enhanced activity and regioselectivity of the enzyme during oxidation of geranylacetone and related compounds. The activity of the mutant R47L/Y51F/F87V was in the order of ketonealcoholaldehydeacid. An effect of the substrate cis/trans-isomerism on the enzyme chemo- and regioselectivity was studied. P450 monooxygenase demonstrated similar NADPH turnovers with cis/trans isomers, nerylacetone/geranylacetone (1.9×10 3/2.1×10 3 min −1) and nerol/geraniol (5.7×10 2/5.9×10 2 min −1), however, resulted in different number of products and product distribution. The Z-isomers, nerylacetone and nerol, were oxidized resulting in several products (five and...

    Description: For thirty years, simple crop water balance models have been used by the early warning community to monitor agricultural drought. These models estimate and accumulate actual crop evapotranspiration, evaluating environmental conditions based on crop water requirements. Unlike seasonal rainfall totals, these models take into account the phenology of the crop, emphasizing conditions during the peak grain filling phase of crop growth. In this paper we describe an analogous metric of crop performance based on time series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imagery. A special temporal filter is used to screen for cloud contamination. Regional NDVI time series are then composited for cultivated areas, and adjusted temporally according to the timing of the rainy season. This adjustment standardizes the NDVI response vis-à-vis the expected phenological response of maize. A national time series index is then created by taking...
