Titre: Bio-archaeological studies at Konar Sandal, Halil Rud basin, southeastern Iran Auteur:Mashkour, Marjan; Tengberg, Margareta; Shirazi, Zohreh; Madjidzadeh, Youssef Sujet:Bioarchaeology ; Indo-Iranian Borderlands ; Bronze and Iron Age ; Agropastoral Economies ; History & Archaeology Description:
Recent archaeological discoveries in the Halil Rud valley in the Kerman province of southeastern Iran have shown the existence of an important urban centre during the Early Bronze Age (third millennium BC), with a rich artistic and craft tradition as well as long-distance contacts with both Mesopotamia and the Indus valley. Bioarchaeological studies carried out at Konar Sandal, south of the modern city of Jiroft, allow for the first time a reconstruction of the past environment and subsistence economies in the valley during the Bronze and Iron Ages. While herding relied mainly on sheep and goat and, to a lesser extent, on bovines of which several species are recognised, agricultural activities involved the cultivation of cereals (barley and wheat) and fruits (date palm, grapevine). Significant changes in animal husbandry practices appear through time with an increase of suid remains as well as the appearance of the domestic horse and Bactrian camel in the Iron Age (late second...

Evidence of coat color variation sheds new light on ancient canids
Titre: Bone, shell tools and ornaments from the Epipalaeolithic site of Ali Tappeh, East of Alborz Range, Iran Auteur:Manca, Laura; Mashkour, Marjan; Shidrang, Sonia; Averbouh, Aline; Biglari, Fereidoun Sujet:Bone and Shell Tools ; Ornamental Objects ; Epipalaeolithic ; Ali Tappeh Cave ; Iran ; Bone and Shell Tools ; Ornamental Objects ; Epipalaeolithic ; Ali Tappeh Cave ; Iran ; History & Archaeology Description:
The study of the hard animal matter assemblage from Ali Tappeh Cave, located on the south-eastern shores of the Caspian Sea, sheds new light on many unknown aspects of Epipalaeolithic ways of life in this region and expands our knowledge of techno-economic strategies using materials other than lithic artefacts. Fourteen artefacts from the collection conserved in the National Museum of Iran were selected for the present research. The osseous and shell artefacts were studied using technological and microwear approaches in order to reconstruct the different stages of the techno-economic scheme of raw material acquisition, transformation and utilization of the objects. The technical marks show the use of abrasion, scraping and grooving techniques in the debitage and shaping phases for the transformation of bone tools, shell tools and ornaments. The acquisition and transformation sequences of the shell artefacts were partially reconstructed based on the identification of the finished...
