    Titre: Serology of Atlantic Clupeoid Fishes
    Auteur: Sindermann, Carl J.
    Sujet: Biology;
    Description: Species and subpopulation relationships of five Atlantic clupeoid fishes have been examined with a variety of serological approaches. Quantitative studies of erythrocyte antigens have enabled distinction of geographic groups of Atlantic herring and alewives. Use of two erythrocyte antigens detected by absorbed antiserum has indicated that at least two major stocks of immature Atlantic herring exist in the Gulf of Maine. Hemagglutinins in plant extracts have been used to distinguish individual alewives, and quantitative studies of four spawning populations indicate genetic heterogeneity among the groups sampled. Serological relationships of all five clupeoid species have been determined with a variety of methods using serum and erythrocyte antigens. Immunogenetic methods offer a promising approach to taxonomic problems among the clupeoids and other teleost groups.

    Titre: A Blood Group System for Spiny Dogfish, Squalus acanthias L.
    Auteur: Sindermann, Carl J.; Mairs, Donald F.
    Sujet: Journal Articles;
    Description: 1. An erythrocyte antigen system of dogfish, Squalus acanthias, has been recognized and described with a progression of serological procedures including isoagglutination, antiserum absorption and isoimmunization. This system, the "S" blood group system, contains at least two antigens, "S 1 " and "S 2 ." Individual fish may possess both, either or neither of the antigens, being of blood groups (types) S 1 ,S 2, S 1 , S 2 or S 0 , respectively. Reagents specific for the antigens have been prepared from normal dogfish sera and absorbed rabbit antiserum, for quantitative studies of blood group frequencies in dogfish from different geographic areas. Fish sampled thus far in the Gulf of Maine (138 individuals) have the following frequencies: S 1 S 2 —1.4%, S 1 —66.7%, S 2 —0.7%, and S 0 —31.2%. Blood groups of females and unborn pups are compatible with a simple genetic hypothesis of three alleles, S 1 , S 2 and S 0 , controlling the system.

    Titre: Serum Hemagglutinins of the Winter Skate, Raja ocellata Mitchill, from the Western North Atlantic Ocean
    Auteur: Sindermann, Carl J.; Honey, Kenneth A.
    Sujet: Zoology;
    Description: Two erythrocyte isoantigens have been demonstrated in the winter skate with serum agglutinins. Individual skate sera were found, with cross-matching tests and absorption analysis, to contain both, either, or neither of two isoagglutinins. Strong natural heteroagglutinins for human and teleost erythrocytes also were found in skate sera, and a year-round study indicated that titers varied seasonally, reaching a maximum in late summer and a minimum in late winter.

    Titre: Electrophoretic Analysis of the Hemoglobins of Atlantic Clupeoid Fishes
    Auteur: Sindermann, Carl J.; Honey, Kenneth A.
    Sujet: Zoology;
    Description: Hemoglobins of five species of Atlantic clupeoid fishes, analyzed by agar electrophoresis for possible variant patterns that could be used to determine discreteness of subpopulations, were remarkably similar in numbers and mobilities of fractions. No abnormal hemoglobin patterns were found in the samples examined. One species (Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus) was sampled throughout much of its area of abundance in the western North Atlantic Ocean, and at various ages and maturity conditions, without finding variant hemoglobin patterns.
