This article deals with the changes of graphical representations of the tale and its figures from the late seventeenth century up to the present. Analysis of the historic pictorial material on a basis of more than 300 items reveals that illustrations concerning the episode in the blood chamber as well as of scenes showing the helpless woman at the mercy of the ripper are rather characteristic of the period up to about 1850. After that time the cruel events are sublimated and the representation of Bluebeard handing over the key to his wife dominates, suggesting a change in pedagogical concepts.

Description: Bortolini et al. (1) claim to infer patterns of folktale diffusion using genomic data. What is not said in their paper is that such a proposal is not new. For example, Korotayev and Khaltourina (2) showed statistical correlation between spatial distributions of mythological motifs and genetic markers, considerably above the 4,000 km proposed by Bortolini et al. (1). Such correlations allow us to reconstruct in detail the … [↵][1]1To whom correspondence should be addressed. Email: Julien.dHuy{at}malix.univ-paris1.fr. [1]: #xref-corresp-1-1

Description: The paper deals with the historical and recent situation in classifying international folk tales and gives an overview of new developments, for example new catalogs for types and motifs. From the outset up to date, folk narrative researchers have been creating systems for ordering large masses of tale material according to genres, actors and incidents. The concentration on oral traditions, however, has largely neglected the important literary history of many tales. It was necessary to include such information into the new international catalog ATU (Aarne/Thompson/Uther). The concept of tale type and here must be understood to be flexible. It is not a constant unit of measure or a way to refer to lifeless material from the past. Instead, as part of a greater dynamic, it is adaptable, and can be integrated into new thematic compositions and media. Some former catalog makers also had used the system of numbers for expansion beyond number 2400 in order to describe other genres such...

Description: The present article considers current trends in the documentation of narratives. Approximately seventy indices published during the last fifteen years are compared for contents and structure and are evaluated within the framework of the existing national and international systems of classification. Three basic tendencies were observed: 1) a renewed interest in the documentation of narratives in Europe and beyond; 2) the inclusion of genres that up to now have received less scholarly attention (e. g., animal tales, nursery rhymes, ballads), and of specific forms within individual genres (e. g., contemporary legends); 3) an increasing specialization (systematics, period) in the indices despite the retention of the international systems of Aarne and Thompson's "The Types of the Folktale" and Thompson's "Motif Index".
