Titre: The Making of the Oxford
    Auteur: Butler, Martin
Description: The Oxford edition of Ben Jonson (11 vols, 1925–52) was one of the landmark scholarly editions of the twentieth century. These days it is known familiarly as ‘Herford and Simpson’, but behind this simple designation there is a complex history involving the personal relationships of the editors, C. H. Herford, Percy Simpson, and Evelyn Simpson, and the institutional workings of Oxford University Press. The editionʼs distinctive achievements, pragmatic accommodations, and shortcomings document the emergence of new principles of textual analysis in this period, and the transformation of bibliography as a subject of academic study.

Titre: Monte Carlo Methods for the Game Kingdomino
Auteur: Gedda, Magnus; Lagerkvist, Mikael Z.; Butler, Martin
Sujet: Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence
Description: Kingdomino is introduced as an interesting game for studying game playing: the game is multiplayer (4 independent players per game); it has a limited game depth (13 moves per player); and it has limited but not insignificant interaction among players. Several strategies based on locally greedy players, Monte Carlo Evaluation (MCE), and Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) are presented with variants. We examine a variation of UCT called progressive win bias and a playout policy (Player-greedy) focused on selecting good moves for the player. A thorough evaluation is done showing how the strategies perform and how to choose parameters given specific time constraints. The evaluation shows that surprisingly MCE is stronger than MCTS for a game like Kingdomino. All experiments use a cloud-native design, with a game server in a Docker container, and agents communicating using a REST-style JSON protocol. This enables a multi-language approach to separating the game state, the strategy implementations, and the coordination layer. Comment: To be published in IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games 2018 (IEEE CIG 2018)

Description: All around the world and throughout history resistance has played an important role – and it still does. Some strive to raise it to cause change. Some dare not to speak of it. Some try to smother it to keep a status quo. The contributions to this volume explore phenomena of resistance in a range of historical and contemporary environments. In so doing, they not only contribute to shaping a comparative view on subjects, representations, and contexts of resistance, but also open up a theoretical dialogue on terms and concepts of resistance both in and across different disciplines. With contributions by Micha Brumlik, Peter McLaren, Gayatri C. Spivak and others.

Description: An interesting incident at one of the London theatres, which has been overlooked by theatre historians, is recorded in the Historical Collections of Nehemiah Wallington, a citizen and turner of London. Wallington (1598–1658) operated a small independent business in Eastcheap and, in common with many other contemporaries of middling station, had a very pious cast of mind. For thirty years he compiled a collection of memorabilia of men and affairs, and particularly of events which revealed the workings of Providence. Early in 1642 he recorded the following: Mark the judgement of God upon one that stood in defence of plays, and to maintain them.

Titre: The Two-Period Travelling Salesman Problem Applied to Milk Collection in Ireland
Auteur: Butler, Martin; Williams, H.; Yarrow, Leslie-Ann
Sujet: travelling salesman problem ; inequalities ; cutting planes ; Branch-and-Bound
Description: We describe a new extension to the Symmetric Travelling Salesman Problem (STSP) in which some nodes are visited inboth of 2 periods and the remaining nodes are visited in either 1 ofthe periods. A number of possible Integer Programming Formulationsare given. Valid cutting plane inequalities are defined for thisproblem which result in an, otherwise prohibitively difficult, modelof 42 nodes becoming easily solvable by a combination of cuts andBranch-and-Bound. Some of the cuts are entered in a “pool” andonly used when it is automatically verified that they are violated.Other constraints which are generalisations of the subtour and combinequalities for the single period STSP, are identified manuallywhen needed. Full computational details of solution process aregiven.
